New Delhi:The Dental Council of India (DCI) has recently directed all the States across the country to appoint Dental Specialists in all the Hospitals and Health Centres where a dental department is operative.
DCI General Body took this policy decision in its recent meeting, which was held last month on May 20 and May 21, 2023 with an aim for betterment of Oral Health of the masses.
Referring to this, DCI President Dr. Dibyendu Mazumdar recently wrote to the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Shri Pema Khandu and requested to issue directions in this regard.
In a letter dated 27.06.2023, DCI mentioned, "I would like to draw your kind attention towards the aforesaid subject matter and state that the General Body of the Dental Council of India in its meeting held on 20th and 21st May, 2023 has taken the following policy decision:-
"To request the Chief Ministers of all the States to appoint Dental Specialists in all the Hospitals and Health Centres where dental department is running for betterment of Oral Health of masses"."
Requesting the State authorities to issue necessary directions in this regard, the letter further mentioned, "Accordingly, I would like to request your goodself to issue necessary directions for creation of post of dental specialists in all the hospitals having dental centre in the State of Arunachal Pradesh."
Operative under the Union Health Ministry, Dental Council of India regulates the dental education, dental profession and dental ethics in the country. Medical Dialogues had previously reported that earlier this year, DCI had suggested to Niti Aayog to employ BDS graduates or dentists to train as family doctors, in order to overcome the shortage of doctors in the rural areas.
The Apex Commission regulating the dental education in India had suggested to provide training to such dentists for a period of six months to one year and after completion of the training, certify them as Family doctors.
