Family alleges negligence after woman loses leg movement after surgery at Manjeri Medical College

Malappuram- In an alleged case of medical negligence, a 73-year-old woman reportedly lost movement in her right leg following a hip replacement surgery at Manjeri Government Medical College in Malappuram.
The woman, identified as Parvati, a resident of Chungathara near Nilambur, had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of leg pain. She underwent hip replacement surgery at Manjari Medical College on May 12.
According to her family, complications during the surgery allegedly caused damage to the nerves in her leg. Subsequently, she was shifted to the Government Medical College in Kozhikode in critical condition for further treatment.
After her transfer to Kozhikode Medical College, doctors informed her family that a vein had been severed during the surgery and had been stapled.
The family further alleged that they noticed the operated leg had turned cold by the evening after surgery and immediately alerted the medical staff. A post-operative scan reportedly revealed a complete loss of blood flow to the leg.
Speaking to the TNIE, Parvathy’s grandson Rahul K R said, “The scan conducted after the surgery revealed that blood flow to my grandmother’s leg had completely stopped. However, the duty doctor allegedly asked us not to disclose this and advised us to shift the patient elsewhere”.
He also stated, “They made us write that we were shifting the patient on our own request. She was sent to Kozhikode Medical College without any details regarding the treatment provided so far”.
Rahul further said, “The doctors at Manjeri medical college already knew that the nerve had been cut, but this was hidden from us. It was only after another scan at Kozhikode MCH that we realised the nerve had been cut and stapled. We immediately filed a complaint with the Malappuram district medical officer. We also contacted the crime branch and the special branch. They have sought all the details, and we will soon file a formal complaint”.
The family also alleged financial difficulties during the course of the treatment.
