Fire erupts at under-construction building at Thrissur Medical College Hospital

Thrissur: An under-construction building housing the Mother and Child Care Ward at Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH), Thrissur, caught fire on Tuesday. No casualties were reported as the building was vacant and had not yet been opened for use.

Teams of Fire and Rescue Services in Thrissur and Wadakkanchery rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations. The teams continued efforts to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading further.

“The fire has been completely extinguished, and the situation is under control. There were no casualties, though the blaze caused damage to the building,” a police officer said, reports PTI.

According to preliminary investigation, the fire is believed to have originated on the top floor of the newly constructed building before spreading to the lower floors. Thick smoke and flames engulfed parts of the structure, triggering an immediate emergency response.

According to Times Kerala, the initial conclusion is that the cause of the accident was a technical fault in the insulation or a short circuit from the AC while the AC electrical work was in progress. The fire that broke out from the AC spread to the wiring materials nearby.

As the building is newly constructed and had not been opened for use, no patients, staff members, or other people were inside when the fire broke out. Initial reports also suggest that no one was trapped inside the building, reports Mathrubhumi.

Authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. A detailed investigation is expected to be conducted to establish the circumstances that led to the incident.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a fire broke out at a private hospital on Garh Road in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur, prompting a swift emergency response that ensured the safe evacuation of patients and staff. Fire officials said the blaze was brought under control without any loss of life.
