Chennai: The ongoing work of the much-awaited multi-super speciality hospital at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research is set to receive a boost after the Tamil Nadu health department sanctioned another Rs 240.54 crore to expand the hospital.
In 2021, the DMK government announced the construction of the 500-bed hospital at the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research in Guindy for Rs 250 crore.

The hospital, by the name of Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital, would be expanded by adding 500 more beds and would include specialities such as nephrology, urology, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, medical and surgical gastroenterology, radiology, vascular surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, medical and surgical oncology, transfusion medicine, anesthesiology, pathology and a biochemistry department.
The hospital would take manpower from the Government Cuddalore Medical College and Hospital, which includes the 32 posts such as pharmacists, grade-II nursing superintendents, physiotherapists, dieticians, assistants, steam engineers, junior engineers and ECG technicians, states an order released by the health department. The order, as per a media report in the Hindu, further said that when the currently occupied position at the Cuddalore hospital falls vacant due to the retirement of personnel, it would be filled on a contract basis.
The hospital has 757 posts, comprising 249 regular and 508 contract posts. The 249 posts would be created for Rs 42.81 crore. At the same time, the 508 contract posts would cost Rs 11 crore.
Meanwhile, in January this year, Chief Minister MK Stalin inspected the ongoing construction work of the hospital. Health Minister Ma Subramanian had stated that the hospital's work would be completed by June this year even though the tender for the construction is in September.
