HC lauds UP Govt's move to allocate land for SRN Hospital expansion
Prayagraj- In a significant development, the Allahabad High Court has lauded the Uttar Pradesh Government's move to provide additional land for the Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital, which is affiliated with Motilal Nehru Medical College.
The observation was made during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed regarding the dilapidated condition of the hospital.
In its order dated May 26, the Court stated that this step reflects the government's commitment to strengthening healthcare services. The Court observed, "This allocation paves the way for specialized treatment facilities within the city and for meeting the needs of neighbouring districts."
The high court expressed hope that this allocation would resolve the medical problems being faced by patients in Prayagraj and the surrounding districts.
The court further noted that due to the lack of healthcare infrastructure in the city, residents have long had to travel to Lucknow or New Delhi for advanced treatment.
It was also stated that the close monitoring of construction works by the Chief Secretary reflects the government's sensitivity towards the needs of the public.
According to the TOI news report, while taking on record the counter-affidavit filed by the Chief Secretary of UP, Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal observed that with the allotment of 50,014 square meters of land for a medical college, "the dream of a tertiary medical setup in the city has now begun to materialise."
He also stated that the expansion and upgradation of SRN Hospital was made possible in such a short span of time solely due to the efforts of the former Additional Chief Secretary (Medical Health, Family Welfare, and Medical Education), Parthasarathi Sen Sharma, and the current official, Amit Kumar Ghosh.
District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma and MLN Medical College Principal V.K. Pandey were present during the hearing. The court exempted Pandey from personal appearance until further orders and scheduled the next hearing of the case for May 29.
