IGGMCH Orthopedics Dept performs over 1000 surgeries in a year, Generates Rs 3.64 Crore

IGGMCH Provides Life-Saving Surgeries and Earns Rs. 3.64
Nagpur: The orthopaedics department at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) also known as Mayo Hospital in Nagpur, has set a remarkable example among government hospitals by delivering high-quality treatment while maintaining financial sustainability. Over the past year, the Hospital generated approximately Rs. 3.64 crore in revenue through surgeries performed under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY).
Among the surgeries conducted, 64 were hip replacements and 88 were bipolar hip replacements, demonstrating the department’s commitment to addressing complex medical needs.
The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana, which provides health coverage of up to Rs. 25 lakh for beneficiaries, has expanded its reach to include citizens with white ration cards, as well as those below and above the poverty line. This inclusive approach ensures that a larger section of the population can access high-quality medical care without financial barriers.
According to Nagpur Trends, under the leadership of Dr Mohammad Faisal, the head of the orthopedics department at IGGMCH, a total of 1,863 surgeries were performed between January 1 and December 31, 2024. Of these, 1,231 surgeries (66%) were carried out under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, generating a revenue of ₹3,64,60,750 for the hospital administration.
The department has also actively utilized CSR funds, benefiting 554 patients who were treated through charitable donations. Furthermore, 78 non-beneficiary patients also received financial assistance for surgeries and implants.
According to news reports, IGGMCH consistently carried out a high volume of procedures throughout the year, averaging more than 150 major surgeries per month. The highest number of MJPJAY-sponsored surgeries was recorded in July, with 121 surgeries, while February and October saw 159 and 153 surgeries, respectively.
A notable feature of the department’s success is the fact that many life-changing procedures, such as knee replacements, spinal trauma surgeries, and amputations, were provided to patients at zero cost. This was made possible by leveraging state-sponsored insurance schemes and CSR funding.

Speaking to TOI, Dr Mohammad Faisal, professor and head of the orthopedics department said, "Our goal has always been to ensure that no patient is denied treatment due to financial constraints. By leveraging govt schemes and corporate social responsibility initiatives, we have been able to provide high-quality orthopedic care at zero cost to many patients, while also strengthening the hospital's financial resources.
