Telangana gets Rs 200 crore incentive for maternal and child healthcare

Hyderabad: To strengthen maternal and child healthcare services, Telangana has received a Rs 200 crore incentive from the Centre for its strong performance in improving healthcare outcomes. The funds will be used to upgrade government hospitals and improve the quality of healthcare services across the state.

According to the news reports, Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Dr Sangeetha Satyanarayana said the incentive would support the expansion of maternal and newborn care infrastructure, development of specialised healthcare units, and improvement of overall service quality in government hospitals.

“The state plans to expand neonatal care units in selected hospitals, modernise labour rooms and operation theatres as per national quality standards, and establish midwifery-led care units, Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) wards and lactation management units,” she said, reports Economic Times.

She added that hospitals managing a large number of deliveries would be equipped with advanced monitoring systems to closely track the health of mothers and foetuses.

The incentive will also support the upgradation of government healthcare institutions according to Indian Public Health Standards (IPHS) and help more hospitals achieve certification under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) programme.

Dr Satyanarayana said Telangana has emerged as one of the leading-performing states in maternal and child health due to sustained improvements in key health indicators and effective implementation of government healthcare programmes.

Officials said the investment is expected to strengthen maternal and newborn care facilities, improve the quality of healthcare delivery, and contribute towards reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the state.

Welcoming the Centre’s decision, Telangana Health and Medical Education Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha, in a post on 'X', said the additional funds recognise the state government’s efforts to improve maternal and child health services. He credited doctors, nurses, ASHA workers, Anganwadi personnel, and other healthcare staff for their contribution to strengthening the system.

The minister said the state government remains committed to positioning Telangana among the leading states in maternal and child healthcare and providing better medical services to people.
