Thanjavur Government Hospital to get Rs 100 crore makeover
Trichy: The Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ma Subramanian, has announced a major upgrade for the Government Raja Mirasudar General Hospital (GH) in Thanjavur, which was severely affected by a fire in the maternity block on April 24, 2025.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a fire erupted in the maternity block of the Government Raja Mirasudar General Hospital in Thanjavur, prompting the evacuation of around 150 people, including pregnant women, newborns, and hospital staff. The blaze is suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit in an air conditioning unit, causing significant smoke to billow throughout the building, leading to breathing problems for several staff members.

During an inspection of the hospital, Minister Subramanian assured that the government would invest a Rs 100 crore fund to rebuild and enhance the hospital’s infrastructure. The minister attributed the rise in patient numbers at government hospitals to the increasing public trust in these institutions, which are becoming preferred alternatives to private hospitals.
Speaking to TOI, Ma Subramanian said, "The number of people checking into GH has doubled in recent years as more people prefer it to private hospitals. The general hospital affected due to fire would be developed at Rs 100 crore."
Earlier, Minister Subramanian inaugurated several new buildings at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Among the newly inaugurated facilities were a Master Health Checkup Centre built at a cost of ₹5 crore, a 28-bed pay ward unit worth ₹1.34 crore, and a multi-speciality clinic for transgender people, established for ₹15 lakh. Additionally, three Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), eight Health Sub-Centres (HSCs), and a new PHC laboratory were also opened.
According to the news reports, the inauguration ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries, including Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhian, Thanjavur Collector B Priyanka Pankajam, Rajya Sabha MP S Kalyanasundaram, MP S Murasoli, and MLAs Durai Chandrasekaran, T K G Neelamegam, and N Ashok Kumar. G Balasubramanian, the dean of MCH, and other health officials were also present at the event.
During the occasion, Subramanian also laid the foundation stones for the construction of 13 new structures, valued at Rs. 7.45 crore. These include two PHC buildings, six HSC buildings, and five BGHU buildings.
