Woman allegedly receives wrong blood transfusion at Umaid Hospital, inquiry ordered
Rajasthan: An inquiry committee has been constituted at Umaid Hospital, the largest maternal and child healthcare facility in Rajasthan's Jodhpur division, after a woman allegedly was transfused with the wrong blood group following childbirth, resulting in serious complications that reportedly affected her kidneys.
The committee comprising doctors and nursing officials has been formed to investigate the incident. The panel has been asked to submit its report within three to four days, following which appropriate action will be taken if negligence is established.
According to reports, the 24-year-old woman delivered a baby boy through a normal delivery on July 11 and was later referred to Umaid Hospital due to anaemia and other complications. According to preliminary findings, she was initially transfused with O-positive blood group but was allegedly administered B-positive blood group during a subsequent transfusion.
Hospital authorities suspect the error may have occurred because another patient admitted to the labour room shared the same first name, while both women's husbands reportedly had the same name, leading to a possible identification mix-up.
Following the second transfusion, the woman's condition reportedly deteriorated, and she developed kidney-related complications. She was shifted to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, where she underwent dialysis after being admitted to the intensive care unit. Hospital officials have stated that her condition is now stable and she is out of danger.
According to the hospital superintendent, a written report submitted by a treating doctor confirmed that the patient's condition worsened after the incorrect blood transfusion. Another written complaint has reportedly alleged negligence in verifying the patient's identity before administering blood.
According to ETV Bharat, Dr B S Jodha, Principal of Dr SN Medical College, said strict action would be taken against those found responsible after the inquiry committee submits its report. The incident comes despite earlier directions issued to strengthen compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) following previous postpartum complications reported in the region.
