NBE Allows DrNB Trainees to Submit Original Research Article as additional option in Lieu of Thesis, check details

Research
New Delhi- The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has issued a notice for all the DrNB trainees and Accredited Institutions/Hospitals regarding the Provision for Submission of Original Research Article (Published/Accepted) as an Additional Option in Lieu of Thesis Submission for DrNB trainees.
As per NBEMS norms, writing a thesis is essential for all DrNB trainees towards partial fulfilment of eligibility for award of DrNB degree certificate. Therefore, DrNB trainees are required to submit a thesis protocol and thesis within the prescribe timeline as per the rules and regulations of NBEMS.
Hence, in an effort to encourage high-quality research and publications amongst DrNB trainees, NBEMS has included an additional option for DrNB trainees, allowing the submission of an Original Research Article (Published/Accepted) in lieu of the thesis protocol and thesis submission requirements. This provision is applicable to DrNB trainees of 2024 admission session onwards, the notice stated.
Therefore, as per the notice, the trainee must furnish proof of having undertaken significant high-order research work, demonstrated through a manuscript of an original article accepted by an approved journal in the relevant concerned sub-specialty, or evidence of published research in journals recognized by NBEMS for this purpose.
On this, only original papers, meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and large case series that are published or already accepted for publication in journals published in Medline, Pubmed Central, Embase, Scopus, Science Citation Index and Science Citation Index Expanded.
Meanwhile, it is to be noted that the published/accepted article must be aligned with the dissertation protocol that the trainee submitted at the beginning of their DrNB course, as per the existing policy for thesis protocol submission. This ensures that the research conducted and presented in the article is consistent with the initially planned scope of their dissertation.
Moreover, the research work must be conducted during the DrNB training period, and the trainee must be the first or corresponding author of the article. However, this provision is not applicable to trainees enrolled in Direct 6-year Super Specialty courses.
The notice further stated that the trainee who have completed DrNB training but have not submitted their thesis may also avail this provision, subject to submission of an eligible Original Research Article as per the above criteria towards partial fulfilment of eligibility for award of DrNB degree/certificate in lieu of their thesis submission. These trainees will be exempted from submitting their protocol but their research should be undertaken during or after DrNB training. Such trainee would be allowed to appear in the final DrNB examination subject to fulfilment of other eligibility criteria for the exam.
All prescribed timelines for thesis submission as applicable for DrNB final examination eligibility will remain the same for trainees opting to submit their Original Research Article in lieu of a thesis.
