TN: GMC Cuddalore teaching faculty demands pending salaries

Cuddalore: Acting over the pending salary, a street demonstration was recently carried out by the teaching faculty of the Government Medical College (GMC) in Cuddalore, demanding their pending salary for October.

The faculty members marched from the college premises to the chamber of Annamalai University Vice-Chancellor R.M. Kathiresan on the university premises on Monday to voice their concerns.

It has been reported that the Health Department have not issued funds to the university since April this year, due to which the faculty did not receive their payment for October despite regularly working at the institute. Following this, they submitted a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor of the university demanding immediate disbursement of their October pending salary.

Explaining the issue further, a faculty member told TH, "Though the Department of Health and Family Welfare had taken over the administration of the medical, dental, and nursing colleges from the Department of Higher Education in 2021, the creation of sanctioned teaching and non-teaching posts is yet to be done. As a result, teaching faculty salaries are credited only after receiving grants from the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The Health Department releases the grant and Annamalai University disburses the salary."

"We are yet to get the salary for October. The Department of Health and Family Welfare has not released grants since April this year and the university has been delaying the disbursal of salaries to over 250 teaching staff. Notwithstanding this, the teaching staff were doing their duties sincerely," said another faculty member.

The issue regarding the pending salary of medical professionals has made headlines quite often. Despite working hard for any medical institution, many health professionals do not receive their rightful pay and are forced to raise their voices in order to obtain them.
