Telangana DCA Seizes 113 Illegal Abortion Kits Worth Rs 47,672 During Raid in Nalgonda
Hyderabad: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, has seized 113 abortion kits that were allegedly stocked for sale without valid purchase bills during a raid at a wholesale medical shop in Nalgonda. The seized stock, valued at Rs 47,672, was found to be in violation of the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the rules governing the stocking and sale of medicines.
According to the DCA, the raid was conducted on July 29, 2026, following credible information. Officials inspected Sri Laxmi Medical Agencies, located at D.No. 5-4-115/B, Ground Floor, Mahaveer Medical Market, Prakasham Bazar, Nalgonda. The wholesale medical establishment is operated by its Proprietor-cum-Competent Person, Mr. P. Sudhakar.
During the inspection, officials detected the illegal stocking of 113 "Safe-T Kit" MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) Kits, bearing Batch No. BH007ABB with an expiry date of February 2028. The abortion kits were labelled as manufactured by Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Haridwar, Uttarakhand. However, the stock was allegedly kept for sale without valid purchase invoices, leading to its seizure by the enforcement officials.
The DCA explained that an MTP Kit is a combination of Mifepristone and Misoprostol, medicines used for the medical termination of early pregnancy under prescribed conditions and only under strict medical supervision. The administration cautioned that unsupervised or improper use of abortion kits can result in serious health complications, including excessive bleeding, incomplete abortion, infection, and may even pose a risk to the woman's life.
The raid was carried out by Sri V. Ravi Kumar, Assistant Director, Nalgonda, and Sri Ch. Sampath Kumar, Drugs Inspector, Nalgonda. During the operation, officials collected samples of the seized medicines for laboratory analysis. Further investigation is underway, and legal action will be initiated against all those found responsible under the applicable provisions of the law.
According to the Drugs Control Administration, Telangana, the illegal purchase and sale of MTP kits by medical shops is punishable under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, with imprisonment of up to two years. The department also urged the public to report illegal activities related to medicines and suspected drug manufacturing through its toll-free helpline 1800-599-6969, which operates on all working days between 10:30 AM and 5:00 PM.
