PCI Revamps B.Pharm Curriculum, Introduces AI and Digital Technologies from 2026-27

New Delhi: The Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) has announced a major overhaul of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) curriculum in line with the National Education Policy (NEP), introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications and other emerging digital technologies from the 2026-27 academic session to modernise pharmacy education and better align it with evolving industry requirements.
In an official notification, the Council unveiled the revised syllabus with a stronger emphasis on innovation, flexibility and industry relevance. The updated curriculum has been designed to strengthen scientific fundamentals while promoting practical and experiential learning, research orientation and the development of professional competencies required for contemporary pharmacy practice.
A key feature of the revised curriculum is the introduction of AI and digital technologies, enabling students to understand their applications in drug discovery, pharmaceutical manufacturing, pharmacokinetics and pharmacy practice, while maintaining a strong foundation in core pharmaceutical sciences. The syllabus also incorporates AI-driven applications in food waste management and resource optimisation, reflecting the expanding role of digital technologies in healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences.
The revamped programme also introduces research projects during the seventh and eighth semesters, mandatory internships in the fourth and sixth semesters, interdisciplinary learning, and a broader range of elective courses aimed at providing students with greater academic flexibility. In addition, the curriculum focuses on industry and clinical exposure, outcome-based education, innovation, entrepreneurship and start-up development to enhance the employability and professional readiness of pharmacy graduates.
According to the PCI, the revised syllabus has been developed to equip every pharmacy graduate with the core competencies and professional attributes expected in modern healthcare. These include strong pharmaceutical knowledge, scientific and analytical thinking, ethical and professional integrity, patient-centred care, industry and practice readiness, digital and technological awareness, effective communication skills, and other competencies essential for pharmacy professionals.
The detailed syllabus introduces dedicated AI-focused courses, including AI Applications in Pharmaceutical Sciences and AI in Clinical Applications, covering topics such as machine learning, predictive modelling, drug discovery, ADMET prediction, virtual screening, pharmacovigilance, clinical decision-making, pharmacokinetics, drug safety, natural products, pharmaceutical chemistry, manufacturing process monitoring, quality prediction, analytical modelling, chemometrics, real-world healthcare data analytics, AI lifecycle management, validation, model auditing, public health analytics, outbreak prediction, vaccination forecasting, epidemiological trend analysis, automation, Industry 4.0, Internet of Things (IoT) and ethical AI applications in pharmaceutical sciences and healthcare.
The curriculum further aims to help students apply supervised machine learning models to healthcare datasets, interpret predictive models for adverse drug reactions and therapeutic outcomes, evaluate machine learning performance using healthcare metrics, and develop an understanding of responsible AI implementation in patient care and pharmaceutical research.
The Tribune reports that the Pharmacy Council of India has redesigned the B.Pharm curriculum to create industry-ready pharmacy graduates by integrating AI, digital technologies, research, internships, interdisciplinary education and entrepreneurship into the programme. The revised curriculum is intended to strengthen students' scientific knowledge, technological capabilities and professional competencies while preparing them for emerging opportunities across pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug discovery, clinical practice and the broader healthcare ecosystem.
