Doctors-in-Training Show High Awareness but Low Willingness for Vision-Correction Surgery, Suggests Study

A recent cross-sectional study published in the Journal of Clinical Ophthalmology and Research in May 2024 reveals a fascinating disconnect among future physicians. While an impressive 92.5% are aware of surgical vision correction methods, only 47.4% are actually willing to undergo the procedures themselves.

While medical students represent the indispensable next generation of eye care providers who will fundamentally guide and counsel patients on various vision correction options, there remains a notable scarcity of dedicated clinical research examining their intrinsic preferences and perspectives on these critical surgical interventions. To bridge this significant clinical gap, Dr. Yashi Bansal, alongside an esteemed team of researchers affiliated with the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences and Manipal TATA Medical College, aimed to systematically evaluate the baseline awareness, attitudes, and personal procedural choices regarding refractive surgeries among medical undergraduates.

Therefore, the cross-sectional survey of 133 final-year medical students assessed their awareness of refractive surgeries and willingness to undergo or recommend these procedures. Students were excluded from the analysis if they withheld informed consent or provided incomplete responses.

Key Clinical Findings of the Study Includes:

  • Awareness Levels: Researchers observed that an overwhelming majority of the evaluated cohort (92.5%) successfully recognized various refractive surgical options currently available in practice.

  • Personal Uptake: The investigation found that less than half of the future clinicians (47.4%) actually intended to undergo an operative procedure themselves, whereas a notable 30.8% completely rejected the idea for personal use.

  • Recommendation Rates: Analysis consistently demonstrated that 63.2% of the undergraduates would advise their family members or friends to pursue surgical vision correction, a clinical stance that strongly correlated (P < 0.001) with their own inherent willingness to undergo the surgery.

  • Procedure Preferences: The comprehensive study highlighted that Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) remained the dominant surgical choice at 44.4%, whereas newer minimally invasive techniques like Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) surprisingly garnered only 8.3% interest among the respondent population.

The results suggest that while baseline academic knowledge of refractive correction is exceptionally high at 92.5%, genuine personal acceptance lags significantly behind, with traditional LASIK remaining the favored clinical modality over much newer surgical advancements. This noticeable apprehension toward self-undergoing these delicate procedures strongly points to persistent clinical myths or underlying concerns regarding long-term safety, surgical invasiveness, and financial cost among future healthcare providers.

Thus, the study concludes that integrating thoroughly updated educational training modules regarding the latest technological advancements and long-term safety profiles of refractive corrections into the standard medical curriculum may subtly equip these future physicians to routinely offer more informed, confident, and highly balanced clinical counseling to their prospective patients.

Although currently restricted to a single academic institution's specific demographic profile, these highly valuable baseline insights gently invite broader, multi-centric clinical investigations alongside detailed qualitative interviews to more deeply and accurately understand the evolving surgical attitudes of budding medical professionals globally.
