AMCH Doctor murder case: Dibrugarh Court Sentences ward boy to life imprisonment

The court convicted Mech under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Previously, on May 17, the Dibrugarh court had found ward boy Kiro Mech guilty of the murder of Dr Sarita Toshniwal. In a notable turn of events, the court acquitted junior doctor Deepmoni Saikia of all charges.

The tragic incident occurred on May 9, 2014, when Dr Sarita Toshniwal, a 24-year-old postgraduate medical student, was brutally murdered in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the gynaecology department at AMCH.

During the investigation, the police scrutinized the phone records of the deceased doctor, leading to the arrest of junior doctor Deepmoni Saikia. However, the court's subsequent proceedings acquitted Saikia of any involvement in the crime.

As per a media report in the TOI, the trial of the case was heard by five different judges during nine years before the judgement was delivered. The statements of 61 witnesses were taken during the trial.

The arrest of Kiro Mech followed on May 10, 2014, after he confessed to the murder, citing repeated belittlement by Dr Sarita Toshniwal as the motive behind his actions.

The Dibrugarh District and Sessions Court's ruling brings closure to the harrowing case, as Kiro Mech is now sentenced to life imprisonment for the heinous crime committed against Dr Sarita Toshniwal.
