Dr G V Divakar conferred with IMA Honorary Professorship
Delhi: Dr. G.V. Divakar, Senior Medical Faculty, Sankara Eye Hospital, has recently been honoured with Honorary Professorship by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for his 34 years long service to the medical community. He has conferred the award on the eve of Teachers' Day at IMA's national headquarters in Delhi.
He is currently serving as the President of the Bangalore Ophthalmic Society. After working as a teaching faculty in Dr. BR Ambedkar Medical College for a decade and holding the prestigious position of head of the department at M.S.Ramaiah Medical College for 14 yrs, he is currently serving as senior professor and DNB faculty in charge at Sankara Eye hospital, Bangalore.
Dr. Divakar told Medical Dialogues, " I am grateful to IMA for honoring me. I am motivated to work even harder now to lead new research for the advancement of the medical field."
Dr. Divakar completed his MBBS at Bangalore Medical College, and he pursued his MS in Ophthalmology from Minto Hospital. Dr.B.R. Ambedkar Medical College from Nov 1987 till May 1997, as Asst.Professor (from 1987-92) and Associate Professor( from192-97) in the ophthalmology dept. He served as the professor and H.O.D, Dept. of Ophthalmology at M.S. Ramaiah Medical College from May 1997 to Nov 2011.
Dr. Divakar stated that as a PG teaching faculty, he has served as a guide for PG thesis for more than 30 PG MS ophthalmology students. He conducted clinical meetings, subject seminars, Journal clubs for PG students, and Lecture classes/ Clinicals for UG students. He was an Examiner both for UG and PG students of RGUHS, Bangalore, from 1996 as an internal Examiner, and he was an External Examiner in the subject of Ophthalmology in different Universities Outside Karnataka.
He further added, "I have been at the forefront of teaching ophthalmology theory and clinical studies to UG students in MBBS, PG students of DOMS, MS ophthalmology, and DNB students for the last 34 yrs. My contribution to Medical Education in the above capacities and as a guide to no postgraduate students, and taking part as an examiner in both Rajeev Gandhi University and as an external examiner in other universities during the entire span of my career, I have contributed relentlessly to Medical Education. Along with these, I have had several publications and have been invited as a faculty at several conferences at the state, national and international levels."
He gave importance to making the syllabus in both theory and clinical subjects more disease-oriented rather than system-oriented, which we are practicing now. " With my experience as teaching faculty for a long time, and observing students' involvement in studies, I can definitely contribute to taking part in framing guidelines, syllabus both at clinical and theory parts for teaching programs and other related activities concerning academic programmes. In keeping with present trends, I will make every effort for enhancing Skill Transfer through simulations on digital platforms", stated Dr. Divakar.
