GTB Hospital Assistant professor arrested for allegedly molesting MBBS student during viva

New Delhi: An assistant professor at the Delhi-based Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital has recently been arrested for allegedly harassing a MBBS student.
According to the statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam, a PCR call was received at the GTB Enclave Police Station at around 12:09 pm on September 26. The caller, a female medical student, reported that she had been subjected to physical harassment inside the hospital.
An MBBS student alleged that an Assistant Professor of the Anesthesia Department at the University College of Medical Sciences (UCMS) molested her on the pretext of conducting viva exam, reports Tribune.

"The complainant, a medical student, alleged that she was physically harassed by assistant professor Dr Mohammed Shaqir Naeem," the DCP said, quotes PTI.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and arrested the accused doctor.
According to the complaint, after taking the class, the accused doctor allegedly lured the student to a secluded spot for her viva and attempted to molest her on September 26. When she resisted, he allegedly threatened her. The victim immediately confided in her classmate, following which a formal complaint was lodged at the GTB Enclave police station. Based on her statement, a case was registered under Sections 74, 75, and 351(2) of the BNS, reports Tribune.
After learning about the FIR, the Assistant Professor absconded. However, using technical surveillance, the police arrested him from Rewari. He was later produced in the court, which sent him to judicial custody. The police have initiated an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to gather evidence. The authorities are also probing whether the accused has harassed any other students in the past, adds the daily.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) directed the medical colleges/institutes across the country to strictly adhere to the National Human Rights Commission's (NHRC) directions of implementing the provisions of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Work Place (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act, 2013). Complying with these provisions the medical colleges are required to constitute the Internal Complaint Committees (ICCs), Local Committees (LCs), Internal Committees (ICs) at an appropriate level and the same should be displayed on the website of the Organization.
