Renowned Orthopaedician Dr Ajay Kumar Gupta passes away, MAMC RDA expresses grief
New Delhi: In a tragic loss, Prof. Ajay Kumar Gupta who served as the Director-Professor in the Dept of Orthopaedics at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC), New Delhi has passed away after a glorious career in the medical field.

Prof. Gupta's journey, from his early days in Jhansi to his significant contributions at AIIMS and RML Hospital, culminating in his distinguished tenure as the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at MAMC, reflects a life dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the medical field. His impact reached beyond our institution, as evidenced by his innovative surgical practices and groundbreaking ideas. Known for his out-of-the-box thinking, Prof. Gupta was a pioneer in orthopaedic advancements, introducing concepts and techniques well ahead of their time. His legacy includes not only the bent tibial nails and jigs for locking but also a profound understanding of biomechanics and innovative approaches to grafting for non-union cases.
Even in his retirement, he continued to share his wealth of knowledge at Rama Medical College in Hapur, demonstrating an enduring commitment to the field and the development of future medical professionals. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Prof. Ajay Kumar Gupta will be remembered for his quiet, unassuming demeanor and gentle smile that spoke volumes about his character. His willingness to engage in discussions on any topic, coupled with a passion for research and new ideas, made him an inspiration to colleagues and students alike.
"As we bid farewell to our esteemed teacher and colleague, we acknowledge the significant impact he has left on Orthopaedics in Delhi, and by extension this country. Prof. Ajay Kumar Gupta will be dearly missed, but his contributions to the field will continue to resonate through the countless lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace," stated the association.
Having worked as Medical Superintendent of NCTD’s largest Sushruta Trauma Center, and worked at LNH the busiest public hospital in Delhi for more than 30 years in various faculty positions, he had extensive experience with complex trauma, particularly spine and wrist injuries. He completed his MBBS from Kanpur University in 1976 and his MD from AIIMS in 1981. He had the distinct privilege of serving as a healthcare professional at esteemed institutions such as Dr RML Hospital and AIIMS Delhi, where he garnered invaluable clinical experience. Furthermore, he has contributed as a faculty member at prestigious institutions including JIPMER, UCMS, and MAMC, where he had the opportunity to impart knowledge and mentor the next generation of medical professionals.
Sanchari Chattopadhyay has pursued her M.A in English and Culture Studies from the University of Burdwan, West Bengal. She likes observing cultural specificities and exploring new places.
