Gurugram: A final-year student of BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) was allegedly shot dead at the Shree Guru Gobind Singh Tricentenary (SGT) University campus in Haryana's Gurugram by another student on Friday.

The 24-year-old medical student of SGT University has been identified as Vinit, originally from Uttar Pradesh's Shamli and was staying at the college hostel.

As per Gurugram Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Deepak Saharan the incident was reported on Friday afternoon. Police stated the shooting took place in the parking area of the 500-acre campus.

On the day of the incident, the medico and his friends were in class at 10:30 am when the main accused, Palikh alias Lucky, is a final-year law student from Delhi's Najafgarh arrived. Lucky was accompanied by 3 other students, Lucky's brother Rahul, his friend Himani, a final-year BSc student, and Nitesh.

According to a recent media report in Times of India, Lucky and Himani waited outside the classroom, while Rahul and Nitesh asked the medical student to come out. However, the medico remained inside the class after the teacher objected to the disruption.

Frightened that the group might pick a fight, the medico asked his classmates Harsh Kumar, Brahamajeeet and Harsh Shaukeen to drop him to the hostel during the lunch break.

Lucky and the three others were waiting near Gate No. 5., and as the medical student and his friends moved out of Block A they stopped the medico and an altercation broke out.

When the medico's friend tried to intervene, Nitesh grabbed Vinit from behind and Lucky shot him in the abdomen, police stated.

"Vinit was suddenly shot in the middle of the argument with Lucky. They escaped before we could understand what was happening," Harsh Kumar told TOI.

On hearing the gunshot several students rushed to the spot, meanwhile, Lucky and his aides fled on their bikes.

"The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries," stated the DCP (west) Deepak Saharan.

"He was provided medical assistance within minutes of the incident, but despite our best efforts, we could not save him," said an SGT Hospital official.

A case was registered at Rajendra Park police station against Lucky, Nitesh, Rahul and Himani under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of IPC and relevant sections of Arms Act based on Harsh Kumar's statement.

As per the FIR, the argument between the medico and Lucky erupted after Vinit allegedly wanted to be friends with Himani. In a phone conversation with her, he also said something about Lucky. When Himani informed Lucky about it, he was very angry.

On the other hand, SGT University, in a statement said as per preliminary information, the incident was a result of a "personal dispute" among some students. "Police are investigating the matter and the university authorities are fully cooperating," the statement added.

Commenting on the security system, a university official told the daily that the campus has comprehensive CCTV coverage and deploys several security guards, and therefore, physical checking of each and every student is not conducted.

"It is a college and we have a general hospital inside the campus. Thousands of people, including students, faculty, university staff, patients and their attendants, visit daily," the official stated, adding that the administration plans to overhaul the security arrangements and install metal detectors after the incident.

"Currently, no arrest has been made as we are analysing the CCTV footage and finding the motive behind the crime," DCP added.

Police said they are also trying to ascertain how a college student got hold of a gun and how long he was in possession of it.

Further investigation into the case is underway, reports ANI.
