According to the police, the woman, who attempted suicide, was immediately taken to the taluk hospital in Kodungallur. She was later referred to the Government Medical College hospital here.
The accused accompanied the woman in the ambulance to the medical college and allegedly abused her when she was admitted to a room in the hospital on Friday, they said.
The matter came to light after the survivor informed the staff and police about the incident.
According to police, the accused refused to come back in the ambulance, which had taken the patient to Thrissur and stayed with the woman by claiming to be her close relative.
The Kodungallur police caught hold of him and handed him over to the Medical College police, which is investigating the incident.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Veena George has ordered a probe into the incident. The report of the probe indicates that the accused accompanied the woman to the medical college claiming as a close relative of her. Moreover, his name was also registered in the case sheet of the hospital as her close relative.
Without verifying his identity, the hospital staff allowed the man to take care of the woman which led to the horrible incident. The report also said that there was no female staff in the ambulance that shifted the woman to the medical college, but she was given treatment by female staff at the medical college. Therefore, there was no negligence on the part of the medical college, India Today reports.
Police are investigating the case and soon action will be taken.
