Maharastra: Doctor earlier sentenced for female foeticide, arrested for practising without a license

Maharastra: After serving sentence for female foeticide, a Beed based doctor who had been barred from practising medicine has now been placed under arrest by the police for illegally running a nursing home at Ramnagar in Parli.

The license of the doctor had been revoked previously as the doctor along with his wife were proved guilty in a case of female foeticide and illegal abortion in 2012 and they also received 10 years sentence for the said crime.

After 7 years, the doctor was released last year considering his behaviour. However, recently the authorities received reports that he had been illegally running a facility. After the investigation, he was found practising without a license and the police have arrested him.

According to Mumbai Mirror, the district collectors and medical department received some information about the illegal medical practice of the doctor. After that Dharmapuri primary health centre medical officer, district civil surgeon Ashok Thorat, health officials, and 20 policemen raided that private facility of Parli and they found that doctor was involved in treating patients without a proper license for the hospital.

Moreover, they also found four patients inside the hospital, and two of them were showing symptoms of COVID, who were then immediately rushed to the civil hospital. The team continued investigating the clinic until the next day at 7 am. When he was inquired regarding the license, he answered that the hospital was registered in the name of his daughter, but his daughter denied his claim after which the police placed him under arrest immediately. Mirror adds that at the time of his arrest, the doctor allegedly threatened a medical officer.

Beed superintendent of police Harssh Poddar told TOI, "Based on the complaint lodged by medical officer the Parli city police station registered an offense under various sections, including the PC-PNDT Act, Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, Indian Medical Council Act, and for cheating and using criminal force to deter a public servant from performing his duty. The accused was arrested on Sunday afternoon."

He also confirmed that the facility has been active for the last 15 days and told Mumbai Mirror that "He had started illegally practising privately. We raided the premises, where we found abortion equipment, allopathic medicines in commercial quantity, and radiological machines. Four patients were also admitted to the hospital. The accused also abused the government officials and he has been arrested and is in five days' police custody."

Times of India reports that previously the accused doctor and his wife had received a sentence of 10 years for conducting illegal abortion in 2012. The investigation team discovered 20 female fetuses in the hospital compound and also in their personal farmhouse. The couple's licence to practise medicine was cancelled by the Maharashtra Medical Council in 2012.

The whole incident came to light after an NGO in 2011 conducted a sting operation on the Doctor duo and found them conducting illegal sex tests and female foeticide. They had been arrested especially in connection with a case where a laborer who had previously undergone a sex determination test in their hospital, passed away in the same hospital on the operation table in 2012.
