NMMC proposes establishment of civic run medical college
Mumbai: Taking cognizance of the scarcity of workforce and the necessity of providing quality healthcare services in civic-run hospitals, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to come up with their own Medical College in the city.
A committee has already been formed in order to plan the project. The opinion of medical experts is also sought in order to develop the project.
NMMC commissioner Abhijit Bangar stated that due to the shortage of professionally trained medical experts, it is becoming difficult to offers super speciality care services at City hospitals. The proposal of establishing a new medical college will be helpful to provide the civic hospitals with the necessary manpower.
civic-runNMMC PRO Mahendra Konde told The Hindu, "The plan is also to increase the capacity of the hospitals in Airoli and Nerul. A committee has been formed to work on the plan by taking the help of medical experts. The committee will also see if it's possible to have graduation as well as post-graduation courses in the college."
As per a daily, NMMC spends more than 100 crores annually on the health department. Currently, there is a 300-bed hospital at Vashi, two mother and child hospitals in Airoli and Nerul, and urban health posts in each ward. Mr. Bangar further added that they have been working on the medical college's plan so that quality healthcare services can be provided in the city. They are also thinking of upgrading the existing hospitals and are making plans for the construction of the college building and hostel. The civic body is also deciding on the budget that it will be investing in the project.
Bangar told Hindustan Times " We will be able to provide tertiary care facility at our civic hospitals and thereby provide modern medical services to the residents. Through medical college professors, we will get qualified doctors. There will also be doctors doing internship who will be available at our hospitals. This will enable quality doctors to provide efficient services at our hospitals."
