Violence at KEM Hospital: Female resident doctor abused, manhandled by patient's relatives; 1 held
Mumbai: In a recent case of violence against doctors, one female resident doctor attached to KEM hospital was allegedly abused and manhandled by the kin of a patient after the 18-year-old patient died due to cardiac arrest in the hospital.
The relatives of the deceased patient claimed that he was still alive and forced the doctors to restart the ventilator and manhandled an on-duty female resident doctor.
The resident doctors of the hospital moved the Bhoiwada police station and acting on the complaint, the police have already arrested one of the accused and booked the other four under the charges of assaulting an on-duty health worker.
According to the recent media report, the patient was suffering from fever and was admitted to a private hospital for 3 days. But when his condition became serious, he was taken to KEM hospital on September 7th and he was facing respiratory troubles and fits that time.
The Dean of KEM hospital Dr. Hemant Deshmukh informed The Indian Express that "After admission at KEM hospital, Parmar was immediately put on a ventilator as his saturation was 80 percent on 15 litres per minute oxygen. His clinical condition was explained to the accompanying relatives. Apart from the ventilator, he was treated with antibiotics, anti-fit medications, IV fluids, and blood pressure maintenance medications. Despite all the efforts, the patient's condition was deteriorating, which was communicated time and again to close relatives."
It has been reported that in spite of several attempts of the doctors at 1.20 a.m. on September 9th the patient suffered a cardiac arrest and eventually passed away. The doctors declared the patient dead and even showed the ECG lines to the patient's kin. However, soon the relatives become aggressive and claimed that the youth was declared dead without informing his family. They alleged that he was still alive and forced a female resident doctor to restart the ventilator.
When the doctors tried to explain the situation, they allegedly manhandled the hospital staff and the doctor.
Following the incident, on Saturday resident doctors of the hospital also conducted a silent march demanding an FIR to be registered against the accused family members of the deceased after which police booked the accused under several sections of IPC along with Maharashtra Medical Service Persons and Medical Service Institution Act. Police have already arrested one of the accused.
Commenting on the incident, Dr Deshmukh further added that "Any ventilator, when switched on even without being attached to a patient, shows certain graphs during breath delivery and was misinterpreted as spontaneous breathing activity by the patient's relatives. On their insistence, a senior physician on call was called in and after the intervention of the police, the ventilator was disconnected."
