Court denies bail accused in Cuttack MBBS student suicide case

Cuttack: Observing that the investigation is still at a crucial stage and releasing the accused at this stage could adversely affect the investigation, a session court in Cuttack has refused to grant bail to an Odisha Tax and Accounts Service (OTAS) trainee accused of abetting the suicide of a third-year MBBS student.
While rejecting the bail plea of the accused recently, Additional Sessions Judge/Special Judge (Vigilance) Raj Kishore Mohapatra said the police are still investigating the circumstances that allegedly led the medical student to end her life.
"Investigation is in its nascent stage. The involvement of the accused petitioner in the alleged commission of crime, in particular the facts leading the deceased to commit suicide, is under the scanner of investigation. Keeping in mind the nature of allegations, if the accused is allowed to be released on bail, he may not cooperate with the investigation and may influence the prosecution witnesses. Taking into account the nature and gravity of the offences and their social impact, I do not think it proper to release the accused on bail," the court said.

As per TOI media report, the case is related to a third-year MBBS student at Fakir Mohan Medical College, Balasore, who allegedly committed suicide. Her body was recovered from the Kathajodi river near Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Bridge under the Barang police station limits on June 4.
After the student's death, the deceased's mother filed a complaint agaisnt the accused alleging that the accused was responsible for her daughter's death. Based on it, the police registered a case and arrested the accused on June 13.
The complaint stated that her daughter and the accused had been in a relationship for nearly 15 years and had planned to marry in Dec 2027. But the relationship started deteriorating when he started seeing another woman. According to her mother, he apparently also subjected her to mental harassment, which ultimately drove her to take the extreme step.
His bail application was first rejected by the Judicial Magistrate First Class-II, Cuttack, on the day of his arrest. On June 27, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had ordered his dismissal from government service following his arrest in the case.
