Second-year BDS student from Bengal hangs self in hostel room in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar: In an unfortunate incident, a 23-year-old second year BDS student from West Bengal allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling in her hostel room on Thursday night in Bhubaneswar.
The hanging body of a female student was recovered from the hostel of a private college in Bhubaneswar. She was a resident of Haripal village of Hooghly district in West Bengal. It is reported that she was a second-year student in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery department.
Police recovered her body from the hostel room on Friday morning and sent the body for post-mortem to find out the cause of death. Although the initial assumption of the police is that the student committed suicide, the actual cause of death will be known only after the release of the post-mortem report.
The police are investigating whether any other student is connected with this incident. It is known that she also spoke to the family a few hours before her death. Her father alleged that she did not mention anything unusual in that conversation.
“She did not have any issues with her studies in college. We don’t know why she took this extreme step,” said her father.
“She had talked to her mother over the phone at around 12.30. We are astounded as there was no family dispute or any kind of ragging or study pressure. We don’t know whom she had made her last phone call to. The cops have seized her mobile phone,” her uncle told Odisha TV.
It came to light that she was scheduled to moderate a welcome function for freshers. However, instead of going to the function, she decided to stay in her room. She was sharing the room with two other girls who already left for the function. Taking the opportunity of being alone, she decided to end her life.
Worried about her late arrival at the event, a few of her classmates became concerned and started looking for her. They found that the room was locked from the inside. Despite their continuous knocking on the door, there was no response. Their efforts to contact her through phone calls went unanswered. As a result, they quickly informed the hostel authorities, who then contacted the college administration.
Bharatpur police told TOI, “We learnt that she was supposed to moderate a function and welcome freshers. While her roommates left for the function, she was alone in the room. Das had told her roommates she would join them soon."
"It is a clear case of suicide. Her room was locked from the inside and the windows shut. The cause seems to be a personal matter. Call records of her mobile phone are being examined," deputy commissioner of police Prateek Singh said.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death in this incident. An investigation into the entire incident has already started.
