1 dead, 4 injured as Balaji Medical College Chromepet students' car rams lorry

Chennai: A trip with friends to Mahabalipuram claimed the life of a 21-year-old student studying Allied Health Sciences at Balaji Medical College, Chromepet, and left two allied health sciences students and two medical students from the same institute seriously injured after their BMW rammed into a firewood-laden lorry while they were travelling late at night on the Thiruporur-Kalavakkam road.

The car, which was badly crushed after hitting the lorry, was carrying five students, including two medical students. Another car, which was part of the trip, was also carrying five students.

According to the police, as reported by DT Next, both vehicles were allegedly racing on the open road when one of the cars, the BMW, crashed into the lorry, which was parked illegally on the Thiruporur bypass road.

The deceased has been identified as an Allied Health Sciences student at Balaji Medical College. The injured include a final-year MBBS student who was driving the car, one more medical student, and two Allied Health Sciences students.

The incident took place when a group of 10 students from the medical college went on a trip to Mahabalipuram on Wednesday night in two luxury cars. After attending a party, they spent time at the beach until around 3 am, following which they began their return journey to Chromepet.

According to the police, both cars took the bypass road and were reportedly racing instead of driving through Thiruporur town. One of the vehicles, a BMW, crashed into the rear of a firewood-laden lorry that was parked by the road, as per a DT Next news report.

Following the accident, the car was completely mangled. Police sources told TNIE that the lorry was parked illegally and in a manner that posed a danger to oncoming traffic.

Regarding reports of racing, the police said this may not have been the case. However, they are investigating whether the cars were overspeeding.

Following the accident, the police and ambulance services were alerted. The Thiruporur police reached the spot and began rescue operations; they had to use an earthmover to pull apart the crushed car to extract those trapped inside.

While the student died on the spot, the others were initially rushed to Chengalpattu Government Hospital and later to a private hospital in Kelambakkam. Their conditions are reported to be critical. The body of the deceased was sent to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem.

The police have registered a case and arrested the driver under Section 122 of the Motor Vehicles Act. An investigation is underway.
