TN applies for 150 more MBBS seats, no new govt medical colleges planned
Chennai: A Tamil Nadu health department official recently informed that the state has applied for 150 additional undergraduate medical seats at three government colleges. Moreover, there will be no new government colleges in the state.
The Directorate of Medical Education has applied to increase MBBS seats by 50 each at the Namakkal, Tiruvallur, and Tiruppur government medical colleges. If the National Medical Commission (NMC) approves, the state will add these seats to the seat matrix for the upcoming academic year.
Speaking to the TOI on this matter, a senior official said, “We have space to increase seats in Ramanathapuram as well, but it is currently on hold as students from AIIMS Madurai are using the campus.”
Meanwhile, in 2025, Tamil Nadu had a total of 5,200 MBBS seats in government medical colleges, and AIIMS Madurai had 50 more.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that as per the NMC seat matrix, 1,328 PG seats have been added in Karnataka, 1,034 PG seats in Uttar Pradesh, 905 seats in Tamil Nadu, 657 PG seats in Gujarat, 653 seats in Maharashtra, 531 seats in Telangana, 509 seats in Madhya Pradesh, 482 seats in Andhra Pradesh, and 440 seats in Rajasthan, 235 seats have been added in Bihar, 226 seats in Odisha, 224 seats in West Bengal, 213 seats in Haryana, 154 seats in Kerala, 149 seats in Uttarakhand, 139 seats in Chhattisgarh, 120 seats in Jammu & Kashmir, and 115 seats in Punjab. 78 seats have been added in Puducherry, 47 seats in Delhi, 41 seats in Assam, 36 seats in Himachal Pradesh, 23 seats in Arunachal Pradesh, 20 seats in Dadra & Nagar Haveli, 16 seats each in Jharkhand and Tripura, 13 seats in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and 10 seats each in Manipur and Mizoram.
