Calcutta Medical College: Final Year MBBS student allegedly commits suicide

Kolkata: In an unfortunate incident, a final year MBBS student attached to Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC), West Bengal allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling inside the hostel room.

The reason for the extreme step is uncertain as of now, however, it is suspected by the officers examining the case, that the 24-year-old aspiring doctor might have been depressed due to a breakup or due to his brother's suicide a few months ago.

The incident took place on September 16 (Wednesday), wherein, cops found the body of the medical student hanging from the ceiling of his room on the top floor of Beniapukur boys hostel, attached to the hospital.

According to a recent media report, the hostel residents confirmed that the medico's roommate had left early in the morning on the day of the incident. Around 8:55 a.m. they tried to contact him, however, there was no response from his room. Resultantly, they broke into the room. To their shock, they found the medico hanging from the ceiling.

Officers probing the case, have been speculating depression as the reason for the alleged suicide as there was no mention of a suicide note.

"He may have been depressed due to a breakup or due to his brother's suicide a few months ago, but he was a bright student," an officer stated.

However, they have not given any confirmation regarding his depression.

The officer told TOI, "We are still ascertaining the reason for his death, though prima facie it appears to be suicide."

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported a similar incident, where a PG Medical student had allegedly committed suicide by jumping off from the nine-story emergency building in Kolkata itself who was also allegedly suffering from depression.
