Durgapur's medical college student found dead in hostel ahead of first year exams

Durgapur: In an unfortunate incident, a 20-year-old first-year medical student of a private medical college in the Rajbandh area of West Bengal's Durgapur was found dead by hanging in his hostel room.

While police suspect it to be a case of suicide, the exact reason behind his death is yet to be ascertained. No suicide note was recovered from the scene.

According to media reports, the student was preparing for his first-year examinations, which are scheduled to begin in two days. Police are now investigating whether examination-related stress or any other issue may have contributed to his death.

On this, Bhattacharya, the assistant general manager of the private medical college, told ETV Bharat, "It can't be said if there was any mental stress on the student. We received no reports of pressure from seniors or anything of that nature. Examinations are scheduled in a few days, so mental stress due to that is a possibility — though this is merely a speculation. The police are investigating the rest of the matter."

The police are currently interrogating his classmates and roommate to determine whether the student had been suffering from mental distress or depression, or whether he was facing any form of pressure or other difficulties.

The incident took place on Friday. When his roommate returned, he found the room locked from inside. Despite repeatedly knocking and calling out for some time, there was no response.

When the door was forced open after informing college authorities, he was found hanging and was rushed to the hospital's emergency department, where doctors declared him dead.

Raspreet Singh, deputy commissioner of the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, said, "The family of the student has been informed. An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause behind it."

The body was sent for a post-mortem examination and was later handed over to the family. His family members had arrived from Bihar.
