Kanpur: Senior Cardiologists booked under IPC 304 A after death of heart patient

Kanpur: Two leading senior cardiologists including the Director along with the subordinate staff of a prestigious UP based cardiology institute have been booked under the serious offence of Section 304 A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC 304 A).

This criminal case registered against the senior doctors has now become a cause of concern in the medical fraternity across the state.

IANS reports about the case which concerns a 50-year-old patient who suffered acute chest pain since September 11. On September 12, the patient went through angioplasty and a day later was taken for some other test. While he was waiting in a queue, he reportedly suffered another heart attack.

Accordingly, the doctors provided emergency treatment to restrict the attack and administered medicines to save the life of the patient. However, The patient he suffered brain haemorrhage and unfortunately died.

Aggrieved, the patient's family alleged that doctors gave an overdose of injection and ignored the patient which led to his deteriorating health condition resulting in his death.

Subsequently, they filed an FIR against the Dr Vinay Krishna, Dr Avdhesh Sharma, a duty doctor along with technicians and staff of Echo lab of the institute under IPC section 304 A (causing death due to negligence). Usually, the police does not entertain FIRs under section 304 A, particularly in case of government doctors. The hospital building; which was donated by the industrialist group, The Singhania’s; is entirely owned and run by the state government.

On registering the case against top doctors, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Kanpur, Anant Deo told IANS that he has requested the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the district to conduct preliminary enquire into the episode which led to the death of the patient.

"As per the norms of the Supreme Court, we have asked the CMO to ascertain the cause of death and negligence on part of the medical team treating the patient. After CMO's report we will take further action," said Anant Deo, an IPS officer of UP cadre.

Rubbishing the allegations, Director Dr Vinay Krishna said that the treatment was given to the patient as per the International guidelines.

"There was no overdose of injections. In fact, we administered life-saving drugs. We tried our best to save the life of the patient who was having very low blood pressure. It is unfortunate that we could not save him," Dr Krishna stated.
