MD Gynaecology Suicide Case: Anti Ragging Committee confirms Harassment over Caste

Mumbai: The 26-year-old MD Gynaecology Medico from BYL Nair Hospital, who allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her hostel room; had faced harassment over her caste from the three accused doctors; concludes the Anti-Ragging Committee of Topiwala National Medical College.

Earlier, the doctors who were accused of allegedly abetting the suicide of the medico; were arrested by the police and the case was handed over to the Mumbai police Crime Branch.

Medical Dialogues recently reported about the unfortunate incident. It was alleged that the doctor was allegedly under depression as three of her senior colleagues allegedly used to harass her with casteist remarks.

Following the complaint registered by the mother of the medico, the three accused doctors had been booked for abetment to suicide under relevant sections of IPC. The doctors were booked under section 306 (abetment for suicide) of the Indian penal code (IPC), sections of the SC/ST Atrocities Act, Anti-Ragging Act and Information Technology Act, 2000.

The accused doctors were suspended by the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) on account of allegedly harassing her on the pretext of her social identity.

The accused doctors had however denied the charges of 'ragging' levelled against them. They wrote to the MARD asking the authority to ensure 'fair' probe into the case.

They were later arrested on account of abetment to suicide.

Later, considering the seriousness and importance of the case, the investigation was transferred to the crime branch.

Now, confirming that the medico was indeed harassed by her seniors, a member of the anti-ragging committee, on the condition of anonymity informed PTI, "We questioned several people, her friends and fellow students, and corroborated their statements. It was evident that the medico was harassed over her caste and tribe."

The committee comprised senior officials of the medical college, representatives of the MARD, police officials, and social workers.

"The report has been sent to higher authorities in the state government," the member further informed.

Meanwhile, the crime branch of Mumbai police recently approached the Bombay High Court seeking fresh custody of the accused doctors, who were the deceased medico's seniors at the BYL Nair Hospital to which the medical college is attached.

The Crime Branch's HC petition says it did not get a chance to interrogate them as the case was handed over to them when the three accused were remanded in judicial custody. The petition challenged the special court's order of judicial remand, and pleaded that the doctors be sent back to police custody, adds PTI.

At present, the three doctors arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide, are now in judicial custody.
