NMC notifies final decision on 143 applications from 28 medical colleges
Through a recent notice, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has notified its final decision on 143 applications received from 28 medical institutes for starting new postgraduate medical courses and increasing the PG medical seats in the existing courses for the academic year 2024-2025.
Among these 143 applications, 107 applications were for the starting of new PG medical courses and 36 applications for an increase of seats in PG medical courses.

From ragging to stipend issues: Key discussions at NMC task force meeting
The National Task Force, constituted by the Anti-Ragging Cell of the National Medical Commission (NMC), conducted its meeting with the stakeholders to discuss the issues related to the mental health and well-being of medical students.
The Chairman of the Apex Medical Regulator Dr. B.N. Gangadhar and other members including the President of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), Dr. Aruna V Vanikar, the President of the Postgraduate Medical Education Board (PGMEB) Dr. Vijay Oza, member of NMC Ethics Board, Dr. Yogender Malik, NMC Secretary Dr. B. Srinivas and Deputy Secretary Dr. Aujender Singh. The Chairman of the National Task Force, Dr. B.M Suresh, Professor of the Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS, and a representative from the University Grants Association (UGC), Alka Tomar were also present in the meeting.

Drug Alert: 50 drug samples fail to qualify CDSCO test
In its latest drug safety alert, the apex drug regulatory body, Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has flagged 50 medicine batches for failing to qualify for a random drug sample test for April– 2024, which were tested in both Central and State drug laboratories.
Out of the 50 Not of Standard Quality samples published for April– 2024, 33 were tested in Central Laboratories including CDL Kolkata, RDTL Chandigarh, RDTL Guwahati, and CDTL Indore, while 17 samples were examined in state laboratories, including State Drugs Testing Laboratory Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), State Food and Drugs Laboratory Bambolim Goa, State Drugs Testing Laboratory Thiruvananth apuram Kerala, and MP State lab.

What is eye stroke caused by extreme heat
Delhi has been enduring a severe heatwave over the past two weeks, with Mungeshpur in the city's northwest experiencing temperatures as high as 52.9 degrees Celsius. The extreme heat has led to health concerns, including heatstroke, which resulted in a fatality. Additionally, the intense heat has raised alarms about eye health, specifically the risk of eye stroke.
Eye stroke, or anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, occurs due to insufficient blood flow to the tissues in the front part of the optic nerve, as stated by Penn Medicine. When the blockage happens where blood vessels exit the optic nerve and reach the retina, it's termed central or branch retinal artery occlusion. This condition can lead to a sudden loss of vision.
