Centre gives Nod to 232 more PG Medical Seats in 9 Telangana GMCs

Hyderabad: In a major boost to the Postgraduate medical education in Telangana, the Central Government has given its nod for adding 232 PG medical seats of various super-specialties.

These new PG medical seats would be added to the nine Government medical colleges of the State including medical colleges Suryapet, Siddipet, Nalgonda, Nizamabad, and Mahbubnagar along with Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Warangal, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Adilabad, Osmania Medical College (OMC) and Gandhi Medical College in Hyderabad.

While 80 new seats have been approved for the GMC Siddipet, Centre has given its permission for 32 seats for OMC, 30 for GMC Nalgonda, 3 seats for KMC Warangal, and 14 seats for Gandhi hospital. In case of GMC Suryapet, Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar and RIMS Adilabad a total number of 25, 16, 10 and 22 seats have been approved by the Centre respectively.

The nod from the Centre has come under the "centrally-sponsored scheme for strengthening and upgradation of State government medical colleges to start new PG disciplines and increasing PG seats", adds TNIE.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that previously, the Ministry of Health was planning to add 247 additional PG seats in government medical colleges across Telangana during the academic year 2022-23. In this regard, the Health Director had sent its proposal to National Medical Commission, the Apex medical education regulatory body.

Previously, it was being speculated that 80 new PG medical seats would be added in Siddipet medical college followed by Osmania Medical College with 32 seats. Suryapet Medical College would get 25 seats while Nalgonda Medical College with 30 and 16 seats for Nizamabad Medical College. Mahabubnagar Medical College and Kakatiya Medical College would get 10 PG seats each. Further, Adilabad AIIMS Medical College and Gandhi Medical College would add 22 seats each.

While the Central Government approved almost all the PG medical seats that had been proposed by the State, a few seats from Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal and Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad could not get the nod from Centre.
