MBBS at IIT! IIT Kharagpur awaits nod from Health Ministry, NMC to begin MBBS course next year
Kharagpur: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur is awaiting permission from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the National Medical Commission (NMC) for starting the proposed MBBS programme at the institute from 2024.
Meanwhile, a committee has been set up for designing the implementation of the MBBS programme, which will allow the students to acquire knowledge of medical sciences, basic sciences, Engineering, and technology, adds Education Times.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that IIT-Kharagpur recently announced its plans of starting a new MBBS programme in medicine at B C Roy Institute of Medical Science and Technology.
This development has come as the institute has now updated its curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP).
"During these revisions NEP 2020 has been kept in view and its visions incorporated into the programmes as appropriate in the context of the highly reputed technical and science education programmes of IIT Kharagpur ... It is now initiating a new dimension of its multidisciplinarity by starting the MBBS programme in medicine at the B C Roy Institute of Medical Science and Technology," mentioned a recent release by the institute on strategic implementation initiatives undertaken by the institute on NEP 2020.
As per the latest media report by Education Times, the MBBS programme at IIT Kharagpur might somewhat be different from the regular MBBS course as more technology will be incorporated into the syllabus. The students will learn both Engineering and technology with an emphasis on Medicine.
While the progamme is still being designed, the institute is waiting for the nod from the Health Ministry, Education Ministry and NMC, sources informed the Daily.
The source further informed that IIT-KGP plans to set up 100 seats for the first batch of MBBS students. Students will get admission to the course through the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) examination. The Institute plans to launch the programme while taking into consideration the requirement for more medical education seats in the country.
