2 Chattisgarh Medical Colleges lose NMC permission, 1 gets nod for 100 MBBS seats

Even though permission was sought for 150 MBBS seats, MARB in a letter directed to the Dean of the institute granted permission for 100 MBBS seats and clarified that the dean should provide all infrastructural facilities in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, building, equipment and hospital facilities as per NMC norms. Further, the letter clearly mentioned that the college shouldn't commence admission till the time it gets a formal permission from the MARB.

However, NMC didn't give its nod for the Government Medical College Mahasamund, and Korba Medical College as the Apex medical body found several deficiencies in the institutes.

With the NMC nod for Kanker Medical College, there are now 8 government medical colleges in the State. While six medical colleges in Raipur, Raigarh, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur, Ambikapur, and Jagdalpur were already operative in the State, after the Government acquired the private medical college of Durg, the number became seven. After the NMC recognition for the Kanker Medical College, there are 8 government medical colleges in Chhattisgarh.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that previously the Chief Minister of the State, Bhupesh Baghel had announced that in each district of the State, a medical college would be constituted. Such announcement had come when the Chief Minister had mentioned that after opening medical colleges in Korba, Kanker, Mahasamund and Durg districts, arrangements are taking place for commencing new medical colleges in the districts of Bemetara and Janjgir.

As per the latest media report by The Hitavada, now the MARB, operative under NMC has granted approval for 100 MBBS seats in Kanker Medical College. However, it has denied giving its nod for the medical colleges in Magasamund and Korba.

While commenting on the matter, Health Minister TS Singhdeo told Bhaskar, "Approval has been given to establish a new medical college in Kanker. This college with 100 MBBS seats will strengthen the health system of the area along with the education of medical students."

The daily further adds that considering the applications seeking permission for 100 MBBS seats in Kanker, Korba, and Mahasamund, the MARB along with UG Expert Medical Group had inspected the colleges on August 23 and 24.

However, after finding some shortcomings, the committee had given 21 days of time for improvement. Consequently, the Mahasamund Medical College on October 18 gave an online representation.

Responding to this, the MARB denied giving approval to the medical college taking note of the fact that for the posts of Professor of Anatomy, associate professor in Respiratory Medicine Emergency Medicine and Physiology, Associate Professor in Forensic Medicine, in Laboratory equipment appointments were still to be made.

In the case of Korba Medical College, the Committee rejected the application and opined that there was no improvements in the equipment procurements. Further, the Commmittee pointed out that the Principal of the college, being away from the campus, couldn't show the infrastructure.

As a result, the Medical colleges in Korba and Mahasamund may have to wait till the next academic year for approval.
