AIIMS New Delhi cancels MBBS exam after students allegedly use hidden phone, AI to cheat

New Delhi: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has reportedly cancelled the MBBS mid-semester exam after students were found hiding a phone in a washroom and using an AI tool to cheat during the examination.

The incident reportedly took place during an MBBS biochemistry paper at one of the country's most prestigious medical institutes. During the exam, faculty members noticed that several students repeatedly asked to use the restroom. 

When this number suddenly increased, faculty members became suspicious. On further checking, it was discovered that a mobile phone had been hidden inside the restroom. Students allegedly used the phone to access AI tool such as ChatGPT and search for answers to the questions in the paper.

A latest media report by News 18 suggests that around 50 to 60 students may have tried to use this method. While mobile phones and internet access are strictly banned inside examination halls, the students circumvented the rules and adopted this method.

After the matter came to light, the institute cancelled the exam and decided to conduct a re-examination for the students. However, no strict punitive action has been reported by the institute.

Confirming the development, Dr Reema Dada, media in-charge at AIIMS, told the Daily, "A student's mobile phone was left in the toilet. The same mobile phone was used by other students. She said that as soon as the matter came to light, the administration was informed and a decision was immediately made to reschedule the exam."

Medical Dialogues had reported that a second-year MBBS student at AIIMS Rishikesh was recently caught allegedly attempting to carry a mobile phone into an examination hall by concealing it inside his slipper. Consequently, this incident prompted the institute to initiate disciplinary action. The student was caught during a routine security check, where the device was recovered. However, officials stated that an investigation into the matter has been initiated.
