Suicide

Mumbai: In a tragic incident, a 22-year-old third-year MBBS student from Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Hospital allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan with a nylon rope in his hostel room.

The deceased, known for his strong academic performance throughout his medical studies, was reportedly under extreme academic stress and was upset by his family's financial difficulties. According to police, these challenges led him to depression, and his inability to cope with the situation might have pushed him to take this drastic step.

As per a Free Press Journal news report, the incident took place on June 8 at around 10 pm when he arrived at the hostel, when no one was present, locked himself into a room, and hanged himself. After his roommate knocked repeatedly but failed to get any response, the hospital authorities were informed, who then alerted the police. Upon reaching the spot, the police broke the door open and rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared dead.

The student was excellent in his studies and got admission to the college after securing an All India Rank of 3155 in NEET UG. A senior hospital official, requesting anonymity, told HT, “He was a bright and focused student, but in recent months, he seemed withdrawn. This tragedy is a stark reminder of the silent battles many students face.”

“He was feeling the pressure of studies and was also distressed due to financial woes at home. The police were alerted after repeated knocks on his door did not elicit any response. An accidental death report has been registered,” the JJ Marg police station official said.

The incident sparked concern over mental health issues among medical students, who often face immense academic pressure and some, as a result, end their lives.

Medical Dialogues reported the suicide of a medical intern at JJ Hospital last month. A 24-year-old MBBS intern from Grant Medical College and JJ Hospital was found dead under mysterious circumstances after falling from the fourth floor of the hospital building. Her autopsy report indicated that she died from severe head injuries and multiple other injuries across her body. She had only two months left to complete her internship at the hospital but ended her life due to unknown reasons.
