IMS-BHU 25 MBBS students fined Rs 25k each for ragging juniors

Varanasi: In a ragging incident from the Institute of Medical Sciences of Banaras Hindu University (IMS-BHU), 25 senior MBBS students from the 2023–24 batch were identified and fined Rs 25,000 each after being found guilty of ragging their juniors. 

The Anti-ragging committee took action after receiving complaints from the junior students. Following this, the committee held a detailed investigation and found the accused 25 students were involved in the incident.

As part of the disciplinary action, the parents of all the accused students were called for a meeting on Wednesday. While some did not attend, those who came met with the committee chairperson, Prof. Royna Singh and IMS Director Prof. S.N. Sankhwar. The parents apologised for their children’s behaviour, as reported by Hindustan

Furthermore, the accused students also admitted their mistake and promised never to engage in such behaviour again.  

By taking the action, the institute has made it clear that ragging will not be tolerated and strict action will be taken to ensure a safe environment for all students.

Medical Dialogues, a week ago, reported on a ragging incident at MKCG Medical College and Hospital. Two house surgeons were imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each for allegedly ragging a fourth-year MBBS student. As per the complaint filed by the student, the house surgeons mentally harassed him for not showing respect to their seniors. During the investigation, the committee found that while there was no physical assault, the student was subjected to psychological harassment.

National Medical Commission (NMC) had received 88 ragging complaints from postgraduate medical students in private medical colleges across India in the last two years. As per the data provided by NMC, between January 2023 and January 2025, the Commission received the maximum number of ragging complaints from the PG medicos from the States including Uttar Pradesh (13), Bihar (10), Odisha (10), Maharashtra, (8), Madhya Pradesh (8), and Tamil Nadu (7).

Apart from these, altogether 4 complaints each were received from Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana, and Jharkhand, 5 complaints were received from Gujarat, 6 complaints were received from Rajasthan, 3 complaints from Punjab, and 2 complaints were received from Uttarakhand.
