Jamshedpur: The authorities of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH), Dimma, have launched an investigation against 15 senior MBBS students of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 batches after eight junior students accused them of ragging, using objectionable language, making inappropriate remarks, and mentally harassing them.

The incident came to light when the students reportedly submitted an online complaint to the National Medical Commission (NMC) on Friday and also informed the college administration, attaching an audio clip as evidence.

After this, Dhalbhum SDO Arnav Mishra and Patamda DSP Dayanand Prasad met the complainants on Saturday to record their statements. The accused students have been given 48 hours to submit their responses, following which a probe committee will be constituted.

In their complaint as reported by TOI, the eight first-year students accused the seniors of misconduct, abusive language and ragging during an incident that allegedly took place at around 1:30 am on Wednesday at the PG men's hostel of the medical college.

Following the alleged incident, several students from the new batch reportedly came out of the hostel late at night and staged a protest. Hostel staff intervened and persuaded the students to return, after which the situation was brought under control.

After receiving information about the allegations, the college administration convened a meeting of its anti-ragging committee in the principal's office on Saturday morning, as per Jharkhand Headlines report.

While examining the evidence submitted by the students, the college’s anti-ragging cell found the audio recording prima facie authentic. The allegations will be verified through a detailed inquiry.

Meanwhile, the college administration has also obtained CCTV footage from cameras installed on the hostel premises and corridors for examination as part of the inquiry.

Commenting on the matter, MGMMCH Principal Sanjay Kumar told TOI, "Following the receipt of the ragging complaint, an investigation has been initiated. Information has been obtained from the students, and the evidence submitted by them is also being examined. If the complaint is found to be genuine, action will be taken against the accused students as per the rules."
