NMC gives final recognition to 150 MBBS seats at GMC Mahabubnagar

The institute affiliated to Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS), Warangal has earned recognition by NMC, the Apex medical education regulatory body, for a period of one year, i.e. academic year 2021-22.

This medical College is started in the Academic year 2016-17 with an intake of 150 MBBS students. The college offers several undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses. The college has three seats under MS Anatomy, PG Psychology, MD Biochemistry, MD pharmacology each, and two seats for MS Forensic Medicine. It also has 30 seats for DMLT and 10 for Diploma in Dialysis. Government Medical College, Mahabubnagar is started with a vision to impart knowledge and to train the aspirant students in Medical Education.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that after the inauguration of the new college building last year, the authorities of the medical institute approached NMC for renewal of seats. Subsequently, NMC had renewed the Mahabubnagar Government Medical Colleges' permission for 150 MBBS seats for the coming session.

As per the latest media report by the Telangana Today, in the approval letter dated July 15, 2021, for the final recognition of the 150 MBBS seats, NMC has mentioned, "The recognition granted to the undergraduate course for award of MBBS degree shall be for a period of one-year, i.e. for the year 2021-22, in view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic."

While commenting on this development, Director of the medical institute, Dr. Putta Srinivas told the daily, "The final recognition of 150 MBBS seats to Government medical college in Mahabubnagar is a great achievement for Telangana. On behalf of staff and students from the medical college, I must thank Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and Mahabubnagar MLA, V Srinivas Goud for supporting the medical college."

"In August, 2015, the State government issued essentiality certificate to start 150 MBBS seats and by December, 2015, we had identified the campus at Edira to develop infrastructure," Dr. Srinivas added.

The daily adds that after the inauguration of the full-fledged campus of the medical college by IT minister KT Rama Rao, Edira was identified as the destination of the new campus. Accordingly, the 50-acre campus in Edira village, nine kilometers from Mahabubnagar town, the medical college building has come-up at a cost of Rs 130 crore while the entire campus is being developed with a budget of Rs 450 crore.

Although the medical college started its journey with 150 MBBS seats in August, 2016, at present around 625 MBBS students are pursuing their medical education. Due to the introduction of EWS scheme, 25 more MBBS seats were added to the institute increasing the total strength of the institute to 175.

This is the first Medical College to be started after the formation of Telangana State. It is situated in Mahabubnagar which is 100 kms from Hyderabad. The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport which is 70Kms from the college. The railway station is about 2 kms away from the college.
