Two Teaching Hospitals to be upgraded in Rajasthan, Bihar, ESIC Hyderabad to serve as model

These two medical colleges are equipped with digital classrooms, advanced laboratories, auditoriums, sports facilities, etc. There are provisions for hostels for students and staff quarters for the employees. The two medical colleges have a stable infrastructure for running a medical college with an intake of 100-150 students on a yearly basis.

The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment and ESIC Head Quarters in New Delhi had nominated a two-member committee with the board members K.K. Agarwal and Hyderabad Medical College dean M. Srinivas regarding the toning up of the two medical colleges.

As per a recent media report in The Hindu the two-member committee had already paid a visit to the medical colleges planning to be upgraded. The committee had taken a look at the available infrastructure and decided on the necessary steps to make them fully functional.

While commenting on the matter, ESIC sources informed the daily, "Both places already have a 500-bed hospital each, fully equipped and constructed on a par with the best medical colleges but they have been used only optimally for the past four years. The plan is to tone up the health facilities within the next six months."

The plan came after considering ESIC medical college in Sanathnagar as a role model for its improved infrastructure, super-specialty hospital, advanced laboratories, excellent outpatient services, etc.

The medical college worked hard for the past four years and their wonderful initiatives grabbed the attention of the authorities.

All the services at ESIC Sanathnagar, including tertiary care, are available on a single campus for insured persons. The hospital reduced its numbers of referrals as well in a drastic way. The number went down from 20,000 in 2016 to zero last year. A referral committee keeps track of the validity of all the referrals online. This way, the committee ensures that only genuine cases get approval.

The 14 operation theatres running in parallel, has ensured that the patients have to wait for less time. Presence of 16 super-specialty departments have helped to reduce the number of referrals as well. Further, ESIC Sanathnagar has been among one of the first medical colleges opting for the Aadhaar-Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS) which helped improving service and patient care.

While commenting on the improved infrastructure of the college, Dean Srinivas told The Hindu, "We became the first ESIC medical college to fill up 100% insured people and also secured the highest number of distinctions among all the medical colleges in 2019 in Telangana. We have made our 400 students adopt hospital beds for regular interaction with patients."
