With 7428 MBBS seats UP has 56 Medical colleges, 27 more to come: MoS Health informs Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: There are 56 medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh including 26 medical colleges in Government Sector and 30 medical colleges in Private Sector with a total number of 7428 MBBS seats, the MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar recently informed the Rajya Sabha.

Out of 7428, 3178 seats are in Government sector and 4250 in Private Sector. Moreover, providing details regarding the establishment of 27 new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh, the Minister of State, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare informed the Rajya Sabha that an amount of Rs 2,467 crore of the total Rs 4,494 crore has been released by the Union Government for this purpose till date.

The Minister was responding to a series of questions in Rajya Sabha related to the details of medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh in both Government and private sectors and especially about the details regarding the 27 medical colleges which have been approved under the Centrally sponsored scheme- 'Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals'.

Responding to the queries placed by Shri G.V.L Narasimha Rao, the Minister informed yesterday that as per information provided by National Medical Commission, there are 56 medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh including 26 medical colleges in Government Sector and 30 medical colleges in Private Sector. This makes the total number of MBBS seats in the State to 7428, out of which 3178 seats belong to the Government sector and 4250 in Private Sector.

While replying to the query related to the establishment of new medical colleges in UP under the centrally sponsored scheme, the Minister informed that "The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme namely Establishment of new Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals. Under the three phases of the Scheme, 27 new medical colleges have been approved in the State of Uttar Pradesh."

"Under Phase-I of the Scheme, 5 medical colleges have been approved in Uttar Pradesh at total cost of Rs.945 crore, out of which Rs.567 crore as Central share. Entire Central share has been released to the State Government. Under Phase-II, 8 medical colleges have been approved in Uttar Pradesh at total cost of Rs.2000 crore out of which Rs.1200 Crore as Central share. Entire Central share has been released to the State Government. Under Phase-III, 14 medical colleges have been approved in Uttar Pradesh at total cost of Rs.4545.41 crore out of which Rs.2727.24 crore as Central share. An amount of Rs.700 crore has been released till date to the State Government of Uttar Pradesh," the Minister informed the upper house.

Giving details related to the probable date when the medical colleges in UP would become functional, the Minister added, "The five medical colleges approved under Phase-I of the Scheme have already become functional. The State Government is the implementing agency under the Scheme. As per information provided by the State of Uttar Pradesh, the works of the remaining medical colleges is at various stages of completion."
