NMC gives permission for three MS Urology Seats at MKCG Medical College and Hospital

Brahmapur: Bringing good news to the postgraduate medical aspirants in Odisha, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has given its nod for three master of surgery (MS) seats in urology department of MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Brahmapur, Odisha.

The apex medical education regulatory body NMC has given its nod for these new seats for the academic year 2023-2024, adds TOI.

The nod from the NMC has come after the Council's expert visited the Urology department of the medical college on February 27 for inspecting its facilities and submitted a report in this regard.

Located at Brahmapur, Ganjam, Odisha, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati Medical College and Hospital is run by the Government and it started functioning as a medical college back in 1962. Thereafter, the hospital started operating in 1966 and after that, the medical college and the attached hospital were renamed after renowned late Maharaja of Parlakhemundi, Ganjam. The medical college has an intake capacity for 250 MBBS seats and 142 Postgraduate medical seats on yearly basis.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, recently NMC gave its permission for three MS Urology seats in the medical college for the academic session 2023-2024. The Commission gave its permission on the basis of the report of the council's expert.

Speaking about this, the principal of MKCG Medical College, Abani Kant Mishra told TOI, “During the visit, the expert held extensive discussions with the faculty members, superintendent and principal. After receiving approval from the state government, admission to the course will begin.” 

“MS in urology is a superspeciality course that can be pursued after completing a post-graduate medical degree programme. The three-year programme will concentrate on the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract and reproductive organ diseases,” Mishra added.

With this, MKCG will be the second medical college in the State to offer MS degree in Urology after SCB Medical College. Already, the medical college runs MS and doctorate of medicine programmes in at least four superspecialty departments. The college has intake capacity of two and three seats respectively for the endocrinology and cardiology departments. The department of plastic surgery also has two seats.
