NMC nod for 100 MBBS Seats in Nalbari Medical College

Guwahati: Bringing good news to the medical aspirants in Assam, the National Medical Commission has given its approval for 100 MBBS Seats in Nalbari Medical College and Hospital.

After assessing the infrastructural facilities of the medical college, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC has given permission to the medical college to admit MBBS students from the academic year 2023-2024.

Sharing the news in this regard, the Chief Minister of the State, Himanta Biswa Sarma Tweeted, "We've reached another milestone! Delighted to share that Nalbari Medical College has been recognised by National Medical Commission with an approval to admit 100 MBBS students."

"It's a historic accomplishment for Assam with 4 new medical colleges being set up in just one year!" the Tweet further mentioned.

The foundation stone for Nalbari Medical College was laid back in 2019 when Sarbananda Sonowal was the Chief Minister of the State. As per the plans, it was decided that the medical college would be constructed with a financial outlay of Rs 398.31 crore and would provide academic opportunities for 100 MBBS students every year, Medical Dialogues had earlier reported.

While inspecting the medical college back in 2021, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had assured that MBBS admissions to Nalbari Medical College and Hospital might commence from 2023.

Recently NMC Medical Assessment and Rating Board assessed the availability of infrastructure facilities of the college, laboratories, libraries, hostels, hospital and also checked the availability of faculty, their experiences, publications, number of residents/tutors, nursing and paramedical staff at the medical college.

Following this, the NMC board issued a Letter of Intent to the medical college yesterday and gave it permission to admit MBBS students in 100 medical seats.

"The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of NMC examined the Assessor's report dated 27.02.2023 for assessing the availability of infrastructural facilities of the college, laboratories, library, hostels, hospital, and availability of faculty, their experience, publications and residents/ tutors, nursing and paramedical staff available with other facilities available at Nalbari Medical College, Nalbari under the Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Guwahati for starting of MBBS course for the academic year 2023-24.." read the NMC Letter of Intent adding that the college has been given permission admission in 100 MBBS seats.

"In view of the above approval of 100 MBBS seats, the Commission has decided to obtain undertaking/ essential documents for issue of Letter of Permission for starting/increase in seats for the academic year 2023-2024," it further added.

The apex medical commission has clarified in the letter that the college should provide all infrastructural in terms of teaching and non-teaching staff, building equipment, and hospital facilities as per National Medical Commission norms.

"No Student should be admitted in the above course till the formal permission of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB)," the letter further added.
