2 Kakinada GGH gynaecologists suspended after tube, cotton allegedly left inside woman's uterus
Kakinada: Two assistant professors from the department of gynaecology at Government General Hospital (GGH), Kakinada, have been suspended after allegations that a woman was allegedly discharged following childbirth with a tube and cotton allegedly left inside her uterus.
The woman underwent a normal delivery on September 26, during which a tube and cotton were reportedly placed inside her uterus to control bleeding. These were meant to be removed before discharge but were allegedly left behind.
According to reports, a preliminary inquiry found that the on-duty postgraduate doctor had recorded that the tube and cotton had been removed, although they were allegedly still inside the woman’s uterus. The two assistant professors reportedly checked the duty register before discharging her on September 30.
The incident came to light after the woman developed severe lower abdominal pain and sought treatment at a private hospital, where doctors reportedly discovered the tube and cotton. She later returned to the government hospital for further treatment.
Following a complaint lodged by the woman’s family, the Kakinada district collector ordered an investigation into the incident. The principal of Rangaraya Medical College confirmed the suspension of the two assistant professors and said action would also be taken against the postgraduate doctor over the entry in the medical records.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Hospital superintendent Dr Lavanya Kumari said that the woman was discharged on September 30 but returned to the hospital on Saturday. After the problem was identified, she was treated on Sunday. She said action was taken against the doctors involved.
The inquiry is expected to examine how tube and cotton were allegedly left inside the patient, why the medical records indicated that they had been removed, and whether the required checks were carried out before discharge. The findings will help determine further action in the case.
