2 PGI Endocrinologists Shine at ENDO-2024 conference in Boston
Chandigarh: In a significant achievement, two endocrinologists of the premier health institute, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) Chandigarh, were honoured for their research during the latest annual meeting and conference of the Endocrine Society, US (ENDO-2024).
These two doctors include Dr Sanjay Bhadada, professor and head of the Department of Endocrinology and Dr Liza Das, consultant clinical endocrinologist.
Dr Bhadada was conferred the prestigious Laureate Award honouring him as the Outstanding Mentor for 2his exceptional contribution to research and mentorship in metabolic bone disease including primary hyperparathyroidism, osteoporosis and rare bone diseases. He was additionally invited to represent India at the Global Endocrinology Leaders meeting and discuss the unique challenges affecting endocrinology in our country.

As per a Yugmarg news report, Dr Bhadada presented novel research work on bone health and microarchitecture with the use of sodium-dependent glucose cotransporters (SGLT2i) in postmenopausal women with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which was selected for oral presentation.
Dr Liza was awarded the Young Investigator Award for her research work in pituitary disorders in the young faculty category. She presented a paper on the effects of oral glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP1) analogue on metabolic-dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), erstwhile termed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and bone microarchitecture, in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity in the meeting.
The conference was held in Boston, USA, and was attended by over 6,000 endocrinologists, physicians and fellows from all over the globe.
Dr Sanjay Kumar Bhadada is an MD, DM (Endocrinology and Metabolism), FICP, FRCPI and MNAMS and the founder and current secretary of Punjab and Chandigarh chapter of RSSDI. He is the regular speaker at annual conferences of RSSDI, Endocrine Society of India (ESI) and ISBMR. He has more than 160 publications in high-impact factor journals and speaks about his research aptitude.
Dr Bhadada has established one of the most highly sought-after postgraduate training programs in Endocrinology in Southeast Asia and has mentored more than 40 endocrinology fellows and medical students, numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and many early career faculty.
He has received prestigious awards like the Outstanding Mentor Award by the Endocrine Society in 2023, the M N Sen Oration Award by ICMR in 2013, the PN Shah Oration Award by the Endocrine Society of India in 2010 & Prof. Survir Singh Visiting Professorship by the Association of Physicians of India in 2011.
His major field of interest is diabetes in young and bone and diabetes. He is a core team member of the simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant program at PGIMER, Chandigarh. He was the organizing secretary of one of the best-organized ESICON (year 2014) at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
His work on primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is recognized throughout the country. He made the first online Indian PHPT registry program (www.indianphptregistry.com) to compile the data on PHPT throughout India to better understand the epidemiology, clinical and biochemical aspects of PHPT from India and has published many papers on the different clinical and biochemical complications associated with PHPT.
Dr Liza Das (MD Medicine, DM Endocrinology), is a consultant clinical endocrinologist working at the premier Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. She did her post-graduation in Internal Medicine (gold medalist), followed by a fellowship in Endocrinology at PGIMER. Her areas of clinical and research interest include various facets of pituitary disease with a goal to assess and manage its complications and diabetes mellitus. Her current interests pertain to hypopituitarism and its less-recognised aspects.
She has authored over 50 manuscripts including original publications in peer-reviewed journals including Diabetes Care, Frontiers in Endocrinology, Pituitary, Endocrine and Endocrine Connections, among others. Her work also includes book chapters in national textbooks pertaining to diabetes, pituitary and COVID-19. She holds the office of the treasurer of the RSSDI Chandigarh chapter and was recently awarded the research grant 2022 by the ISBMR. She was awarded the David L. Kleinberg Early Career Pituitary Investigator Prize by the Pituitary Society in 2023.
