Thane: In a shocking incident, a BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery) doctor has been arrested after his 26-year-old wife allegedly died by suicide following months of physical abuse, dowry harassment and constant surveillance at her matrimonial home in Ambernath near Mumbai, police said.

The deceased had been married to the doctor who practices in Ulhasnagar on April 30. According to her family, the relationship appeared normal before the wedding, but tensions allegedly surfaced soon after the marriage.

Family members have alleged that her husband and in-laws subjected her to both physical and mental abuse, reportedly over dissatisfaction with the gifts and respect they received during the wedding. The family further claimed that she was repeatedly pressured to bring money and jewellery from her parental home.

Speaking to NDTV, a family member said, "The doctor had installed CCTV cameras inside and outside the house to monitor her every move. Whenever she spoke to anyone, she would be brutally beaten upon returning home. Two days before she died by suicide, she was thrashed for talking to a female neighbour. Driven to despair, she took her own life."

Before taking the extreme step, the woman had informed her mother about the abuse and harassment she was facing, relatives said. Her parents were reportedly making arrangements to bring her back to their home when they received the news of her death.

Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s family, a case has been registered at the Shivajinagar Police Station in Ambernath against the doctor, his mother, and brother. The accused have been booked on charges related to mental and physical harassment and abetment to suicide.

Police said the three accused in the case have been arrested, and further investigation into the case is in progress.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Ramesh Patil, Senior Police Inspector at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station, said, "The accused family routinely harassed the deceased physically and mentally because they did not receive any gifts during the wedding. Recently, they began demanding 50 grams of gold as dowry, which her father, a rickshaw driver in Pune, was unable to provide. We have arrested all three accused, and they will be produced before the court today."
