The incident took place on February 5, when the woman was admitted to Navjeevan Hospital in Baskhari for delivery. According to police, the accused, a 32-year-old BA graduate from Malipur and a 19-year-old class 12 student from Sultanpur, allegedly performed a caesarean section, during which she delivered a baby girl. However, she reportedly suffered excessive bleeding after anaesthesia and never regained consciousness. She was referred to Lucknow, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The incident sparked protests by the victim’s family. The hospital operator fled the premises and remains absconding. Authorities have seized mobile phones connected to the case and are trying to trace her.
Baskhari SHO Sunil Kumar Pandey stated that one of the accused reportedly gained medical knowledge by assisting his father, a ward boy at CHC Jalalpur, while the other one claimed to have learned procedures by observing surgeries at a local hospital. The duo allegedly charged Rs 3,000–5,000 per caesarean, significantly less than licensed surgeons, attracting poor patients.
Following directions from the Chief Medical Officer, a joint inspection was conducted on the night of February 8 by the CHC superintendent, the sub-divisional magistrate of Tanda, and the Baskhari police. Officials discovered that the hospital operated illegally from four rooms of a residential building, without a registration certificate, a biomedical waste (BMW) authorisation, a fire NOC, or the required medical staff as per norms.
Speaking to TOI, Dr. Ajay Kumar, CHC superintendent, said, "No signboard displaying hospital registration details was found on the premises. Various medicines, surgical and medical equipment were recovered from the site. After preparing an inventory, authorities sealed all the four rooms in the presence of the SDM and police."
An FIR was lodged on February 9 by the CHC superintendent under relevant sections for illegal operation of a hospital and medical negligence.
Authorities also ordered verification of all medical credentials linked to the hospital and warned of strict action against illegal healthcare establishments operating in the district. Police said that the deceased woman’s husband lodged another FIR under the charges of BNS 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and efforts are on to catch the hospital operator, reports TOI.
Ambedkar Nagar Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shaiwal assured strict action against those responsible.

As per TNIE, amid rising maternal mortality cases in both government and private hospitals in the district, Ambedkarnagar District Magistrate Anupam Shukla has constituted a probe committee to document maternal deaths reported since April 2025. Action will be taken against those found guilty of negligence or dereliction of duty, officials said.
