Botched C-Section: Two doctors booked under Section 304 A of IPC over death of pregnant woman
Mumbai: Two doctors working with Rajawadi hospital have been booked by the police over an incident that took place in 2016 in which a 36-year-old pregnant woman died due to alleged medical negligence by the doctors.
The two doctors were identified as Prabojyot Manchanda and Megha Dharamdasri after a report on the woman's death was submitted by the public health department of the BMC, death investigation committee, family welfare department, Mumbai, and the expert committee of the JJ hospital. The report stated that the woman, Ruksana Ansari had died due to medical negligence.
The expert panel accused the two resident medical officers of being responsible for the woman's death by negligence during the C-section.
The doctors were booked under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC. The complainant has been identified as Sohrab Akhtar Ansari, a driver with a civil contractor who alleged that his pregnant wife Ruksana was taken to Rajawadi hospital for a check-up on September 20, 2016. However, the doctors told him that she would have to undergo a cesarean operation and subsequently admitted her.
After the operation took place in the evening, the doctors told Ansari that their newborn child had died and that his wife's health had deteriorated. Further, they told Ansari to shift her to Sion hospital as her condition was getting worse. She was eventually taken to Sion hospital in an ambulance on 22nd September, reports the Times of India.
The relatives of Ansari took the baby's body and buried it. The doctors at Sion hospital told Ansari that another operation was required to save Ruksana's life. Ansari told the police, "The Sion doctors took her for operation, and later one doctor came out and told me that my wife's cesarean was done wrongly, that my wife died due to the negligence of Rajawadi doctors. It was here that I complained to the medical board that strict action should be taken against the Rajawadi doctors." The doctors told Ansari that the C-section was botched up due to which she was bleeding profusely.
The Tilak Nagar police had registered an accidental death report and were waiting for the probe report from the health department. The husband, however, had complained of negligence and demanded a probe. A police officer said, "The medical board now submitted their findings, after which we have booked the two doctors." The officials of the Tilak Nagar police station said that no arrests have been made so far.
The expert panel from BMC's health department and a medico-legal team from JJ Hospital went through the case papers and they concluded that there had been negligence on the part of Dr Megha Dharmdasari and Dr Prabjyot Manchanda during the operation leading to the mother and her newborn's death, reports the Free Press Journal.
