Dr Kanak Choudhury Appointed Part-Time Member of National Medical Commission
Agartala: Dr Kanak Choudhury, representing the Tripura Medical Council, has been appointed as a part-time member of the National Medical Commission (NMC), marking a significant milestone in his medical and administrative career.
A well-regarded figure in Tripura’s healthcare sector, Dr. Choudhury earned his MBBS degree from RIMS, Imphal (2004) and completed his MD in General Medicine from Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) in 2015.
Dr. Choudhury’s professional journey spans over a decade and a half, beginning at Garjee PHC in Gomati District from 2007 to 2012. He later served at GB Hospital (2012–2015), followed by IGM Hospital (2015–2017), and was subsequently deputed to Dhalai. From 2018 to 2021, he worked as a Senior Resident in the Department of Medicine at AGMC and GBP Hospital. Since 2022, he has held the position of Assistant Professor in the same department, and in 2023, he was appointed Deputy Medical Superintendent at AGMC & GBP Hospital.
His appointment to the NMC is expected to bring valuable regional insight and clinical expertise to the national regulatory body. Talking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Choudhury stated, “I still cannot believe that I have become a part of the National Medical Commission. Being a person from the North East, we can only dream about it. A few days ago, unfortunately, my parents passed away, and the recognition made me emotional. Not only does it make me a representative of a region that often does not get representation in policy making, but it also proves that anything can be achieved when you put your heart into it.”
Medical Dialogues recently reported that the draw included appointments in several categories. Ten part-time members were selected from the nominees of State and Union Territory governments who were earlier part of the Medical Advisory Council. The states and UTs represented in this group include Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Chandigarh, and Madhya Pradesh.
Another nine members were chosen from the nominees of State Medical Councils, also drawn from the Medical Advisory Council. These states include West Bengal, Karnataka, Nagaland, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Jammu & Kashmir, Assam, Manipur, and Uttarakhand.
